Kirby’s Story by Jessica
One day in a small town known as Providence, fate happened. Growing up with her mother, brother and sister, Kirby formed a strong love for music and played the cello. With this passion, she began spending a lot of time at Community Music Works, where she was given a job. Here she began making films for President Obama among others. Further exploring film and sound editing, Kirby soon became a wizard at iMovie and GarageBand. Her newfound love for filmmaking blossomed into an activity that influenced all aspects of her life. Before attending Documentary Film for Social Change at Brown University, she participated in a programmed called Youth United for Global Action and Awareness, where she met eager students from all around the world who share the same passion for raising awareness of specific causes such as HIV/AIDs in Uganda. From then on, Kirby found that film is a precious tool that could give anyone a voice, and she has since dedicated her life to using her knowledge to create films of great social change.
Ben’s Interview with Sam
About Sam:
Age: 16
Lives in Pacific Heights, CA near SF
Likes filmmaking and Israeli music
Her grandparents are Holocaust survivors from Russia – They were interned in Dachau
Her necklace is her name in Hebrew – Samanta – It means “name of god”
She has produced documentary films about Israeli music in the past, traveling to Israel to do so.
Story:
Samantha waltzed down the jetway, excited but filled with trepidation. She was about to board a plane to Israel. Israel – the birthplace of three religions and home to some of the world’s most incredible music – would be home to her newest documentary. While in Israel, she would interview Israeli artists to not only learn more about their style, but also to showcase their music. It was a unique opportunity which would provide a conduit into the rich traditions of Israeli culture and music.
Nine hours later, she landed in Tel Aviv. Excited about the possibilities that awaited her, she bounced excitedly off the plane. After arriving in Israel, she began to follow up with the Israeli musicians she had contacted. Interviewing prominent Israeli artists, she learned about patterns and culture in Israeli music.
Israeli music, she learned, was characterized by a desire for self-definition and national bonding. This cause resonated strongly within her; Only sixty years ago, her grandparents were imprisoned in a German prison camp. Even today, Israelis are divided over how to address a conflict without end. Israeli cultural music is a beacon of hope in an otherwise conflicted landscape. Through her experiences with Israeli music, Samantha was able to reconnect with her heritage.

Katherine: The Story
It all started in the fourth grade. Katherine was a content elementary school attendee who was content listening to the pop stars of the time such as Hillary Duff. One day, her brother came up to her and shook his head in disappointment. “There’s better music out there, Katherine! Here. I’ll show you,” he said. And with this simple but significant statement came a turning point in Katherine’s life relating to music. He handed her a Coldplay CD for her to listen to, but little did she know how important this seemingly commonplace item would be. Many years later, music has become an integral part of Katherine’s life. She can’t imagine life without it, and feels a connecting sense of need for it. She is passionate about many aspects of music, and she even writes her own songs in addition to playing the piano and practicing for chorus. Her dedication is more than apparent when she takes the effort to arrive to school at least an hour early every day for the sole purpose of continuing her devotion to music. In the back of her mind, where people store their most hopeful dreams, she wishes to be as famous and successful as the very bands and musicians she admires. Her main reason for wishing this is not for gaining superficial fame or getting rich; Katherine wants only to be able to share her passion and love of music with others. According to Katherine, having fans would mean having people be as enthusiastic about her perspective on music as she is. One fateful day not long ago, Katherine thought she would merely be swimming and tanning at the beach with her friend, but to her amazement, she would also be attending a concert. Not just any concert, keep in mind, but rather one headlining Coldplay: the very people that began her lifelong appreciation and enthusiasm for the arts, especially that of music. Katherine was so filled with optimism and excitement that she hardly cared that she was in the last row, not even in a seat, but rather a small patch of grass. Everything was going just as well and even much better than she had expected when out of the blue and in the wink of an eye the entire band leaped off of the stage into the aisle mid-song. Katherine turned to her friend and whispered, or rather yelled due to the noise level, how great she thought it would be if they came up to where they were situated, never expecting it to happen but secretly hoping it would. The members of Coldplay were marching up the stadium steps, slowly but surely passing every row and eventually making their way to the very top. Katherine could hardly believe what was going on! “Am I dreaming?!” she asked herself. When it hit her that this was real, and the very band that inspired her passion was standing no more than ten feet away and was playing just for her as well as the others surrounding her. The others on the grassy lawn started pushing their way to the front of the group until everyone, including Katherine, were so close that there was barely an inch of space anyone could call their own. Some people may have found this to be uncomfortable, but she was not one of those people. The energy of the crowd and the overwhelming joy shared by each member of the crowd desperate to be close to the music created a unique sense of unity among them which Katherine found to be quite inspiring. The inspiration that she drew from such a spectacular experience will be remembered for ages to come and be kept as a personal reminder as to why she loves music as much as she does and why she will forever continue to remain the passionate and dedicated person she is today.
